Death trap on school runs
Five school buses taken off the road for being dangerously unroadworthy are contracted by the Western Cape Education Department to carry pupils to and from school.
All five had valid roadworthy certificates, the department confirmed.
Last week inspectors found the buses had brake defects, no safety glass, loose bolts on the engine mountings and suspension problems, among other faults.
The department said it was not planning to suspend its contracts with the bus companies, but would ensure that the buses were retested.
After the buses failed inspections at the Durbanville vehicle testing centre, the owners had been given 14 days to fix the problems, after which they would be retested, said the department’s Paddy Attwell.
The shocking findings come two weeks after 14 primary school children and their bus driver died in a crash in Rheenendal near Knysna
