Nothing for Mahala
President Jacob Zuma has kicked off the new year with bold promises but his deputy warned South Africans not to rely soley on the goverment to meet their needs.
Yesterday, Zuma marked the ANC's 99th birthday celebration with a speech in which he pledged free education to deserving third-year university students and promised a massive job-creation campaign.
Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with the Sunday Times given as the party made final preparations for yesterday's rally, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe warned of a growing trend in society in which citizens rely too much on the government. He said it was "not sustainable" for the state to have more than 13 million people dependent on social grants.
"People want houses, they want this and they want that. For free, for free! Where have you ever heard of such a thing?" asked Motlanthe.
