Bloemfontein - Police were monitoring the situation at Windsorton in the Northern Cape on Thursday morning after residents burned down a library building during a protest.
Captain Cherelle Ehlers said the town’s municipal building and a library were damaged by fire on Wednesday night.
"We are investigating two cases of public violence."
Residents were apparently not happy with the appointment of the local mayor and some councillors after the recent local government elections.
Ehlers said the situation was quiet on Thursday morning.
Public order police had been deployed and were monitoring the situation.
